The random news that caught my eye
Mood:  lazy
Justice dispensed: Ken Lay and Jeffrey Skilling of Enron were finally found guilty. Of what, pray tell? For Lay, no fewer than six counts of fraud and conspiracy. Skilling did him one (13?) better, found guilty of fraud and conspiracy in addition to one count of insider trading: 19 counts in all. But he's really not as bad as they said -- see, he was acquitted of the nine remaining insider trading charges! Lay faces a maximum of 165 years in prison; Skilling, 185. So even if advances in medicine grant us the lifespans of Biblical patriarchs, these guys will still be in jail.

In other news, ANWR is on the chopping block again, though the consensus is that the Senate won't give in.

Cate Blanchett has filled some difficult shoes in her acting career, including Elizabeth I, Katherine Hepburn, and Galadriel. Now, she will be playing Bob Dylan. Really.

And, on a completely inconsequential note, this is pretty cool. These must be the same folks working on the human-animal hybrids Bush brought up in the State of the Union.

Wednesday Beatle Blogging: The boys of summer

Another beachy pic to go with the continuing summer weather. John's hat rules.

Spread the word
Mood:  a-ok
Tell all your liberal friends (if you can get conservative ones to go, even better) to go see Al Gore's new film, "An Incovenient Truth," about global climate change. Here's why. It opens on May 24 in select areas and in wide release June 2.

School's out for summer, and the birth of Wednesday Beatle Photos
Mood:  chillin'
Now Playing: "Sleep the Clock Around," Belle and Sebastian

I was reorganizing the files on my computer and realized I have a boatload of pictures related to the various fandoms to which I belong, which are collecting dust in my hard drive. So I thought I'd use some of them. I hereby institute Wednesday Beatle Photos (much like Fafblog's "Friday Pie Blogging," but with Beatles, not pie) for the summer, since Beatles pictures are joyful, like summer. This one is particularly expressive of the joy of returning home and having no obligations.

Said joy is enhanced by the discovery that I aced my lab class. Bitten to death by ducks no more!

I do need to study for the GRE. I think I'll post a vocab word to go along with each weekly Beatley fix to make it go down easy, sort of like taking a pill in ice cream.

Today's GRE word:

amortize: (verb) liquidate gradually

I'm sure I'll use that one a lot.

High and (finally) Dry
May Training was fun, despite being soaking the entire time due to faulty rain gear and starting to go hypothermic (it had to be me). We hiked 5 miles the whole time. We did a lot of intense spooning and some creative eating, and made the most brilliant idea of a bear bag contraption of all time. It was sweet. Also, there is a new FOOT game that may just be the best game ever.

But the even BETTER news is that I'm coming HOME tomorrow where it's NOT pouring rain!!! HOME!!! And I got A's in my non-lab classes...the verdict awaits on the final battle.

On the agenda for tonight: FOOT dinner, going to a party but not drinking (Sudafed...bleh *coughs up pleghmwad*), SLEEEEEPING...then hopping the 7:40 shuttle!

C'est fini...

Freeeeedom!
Mood:  celebratory
Leaving for May Training in an hour and a half! The weather looks ominous, but I don't care. I successfully moved out, found happy homes for my furniture, and most of all, beat that lab into the ground. Unfortunately, I lost my beautiful fingernails in the process.

I'm so ready for some HIKING!! And then some California at last...

Only three more days.
Mountain Dew is one of those things I just hadn’t thought about for a long time. The last time I remember drinking it was at a party in art class I took in what must have been first or second grade. I remember being struck by the vaguely extraterrestrial color more than anything else. I don’t even think I’ve seen anyone actually drink a Mountain Dew since then. There are, of course, the rumors of its high caffeine quotient, which I suppose it what compelled me to purchase a bottle (of the Diet variety) from the library vending machine today. Well, let me tell you, that is some nasty stuff. It just tastes bad. Supposedly there’s concentrated orange juice somewhere in it, but it was not nearly as sweetly satisfying as orange soda, nor as refreshing as any of the plethora of lemon-lime drinks that start with “S.” It’s more akin to what your standard Citrus Burst dishwashing liquid might taste like carbonated and mixed with lots of sweetener. Maybe the full-calorie version is palatable. I don’t know. I drank it anyway.

Oh, and never try to mail anything non-priority in a reused Priority Mail box. Never assume the post office sells packing tape. Never assume that if there’s no line at 9:30 that there won’t be one at 10. And never, ever assume that once you’ve left your unusable boxes of books at the post office to go buy packing tape at the bookstore, returned, repacked all your books in a ground rate box while people look at you like some zoo exhibit, and stood in line for 20 minutes, that they won’t miraculously have acquired packing tape and ask you if you would like to buy some. Yeah, I had a great morning.

Feliz Cinco de Mayo!
Now Playing: "The 59th Street Bridge Song," S&G
I've officially started moving out! Looks like the storage space isn't about to fill up as fast as I had thought, and everyone was very nice and helpful there. Yay D'port. I AM SO EXCITED to finally live there next year!

Two of three finals are done, and both went well. The last one should be cake. Lab still might eat me but at least I'll have gone down fighting.

Summertime, summertime...

Things that annoy me!
Mood:  irritated
1. Group projects.
2. Working with other people in group projects. Especially when those people don't do what they're supposed to do.
3. Rain.
4. The library when there are people in it (seeing a pattern here?)
5. Laundry.
6. "First come first serve" storage space. wtf.
7. Losing my hairbrush (*is frantic*), then, finally, finding it. Horrifying, I know.
8. Having a fantastic dream and not being able to remember it.
9. My iPod being a spaz.
10. Everyone else finishing exams before I do.

>_<

YAY FOR MAY!

Edit: Feeling much less annoyed now that my lab partner actually did do her part before leaving. Phew. But I am annoyed that there hasn't been a new Fafblog in a month! I'm starting to worry about our dear friends over there.
